Artist Biography

Biography

Kelly was born in 1973, and began showing her artistic ability shortly thereafter. At a very young age she started creating things such as small sculptural people using her mother’s floral wire. She then moved onto using fabric remnants to create her own trend setting fashions in middle school. Kelly soon began attending Grosse Pointe South High school with a nationally recognized art department, allowing Kelly to cultivate and expand her natural artistic ability. Kelly studied painting and black and white photography under Jack Summers who encouraged her to enter both her photography and paintings in the National Scholastic Arts Competition, where Kelly won a Scholastic Art Awards Certificate of merit for (college) Scholarship. As a senior, Kelly was also awarded the Certificate of Recognition by the State of Michigan Competitive Scholarship program and the Grosse Pointe South Honor Award for outstanding scholarship and service.

Kelly graduated from High School in 1991 and moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design to further evolve as an artist. Kelly stayed at Parsons for a semester, soon realizing that the big city was not for her, she then returned to Michigan to finish her studies at Wayne State University. In 1996 Kelly received her Bachelor of Fine Arts (with honors) from Wayne State University, with concentrations in painting and metals. During her four years at WSU, Kelly exhibited both paintings and metalwork in four consecutive student art shows as well as becoming a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society.

Since graduating from WSU, Kelly has worked as an instructor and manager at the Planet Rock Climbing Gym, she established and managed a website for emerging artists (The Lounge Gallery of Art), worked as a designer for QuatraMedia, an Internet website design company, and most recently as an art consultant at The Avenue Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan.

Kelly’s work is shown regularly at Ornamentum Gallery in Hudson, New York and Orchard Lake Framing and Gallery in Keego Harbor, Michigan, as well as a few online art galleries. Currently, Kelly works from her home studio on new abstract and floral paintings; as well as wearable crocheted metalwork in silver, gold, copper and mixed media.
